George’s 2008 GMC Canyon: Sold With the Fault, Fixed For Good
George Janetos wrote to us four times between May 2016 and October 2017, from South Florida, about his 2008 GMC Canyon. Put together, his messages tell the whole life cycle of a Passlock fault: disclosed at purchase, endured, fixed, and then verified across a year and a half and a few thousand starts. This is all four, in order.
The seller mentioned it, briefly
“When we bought the GMC Canyon, the seller did mention, briefly, that occasionally the truck won’t start. He said that you will have to wait ten minutes and try to start it. We had no idea what that meant until the first time it happened.”
Notice what happened there: the fault was disclosed at the point of sale, casually, as a quirk. That is how normalised this failure has become on these trucks. And the ten minute wait is not folklore, it is the Passlock tamper timeout, which is why waiting always works and never fixes anything.
His son found out what it actually costs
“My son was going to school…..when the ignition failed. He didn’t remember that you have to wait 10 minutes…and kept trying it. Eventually, he called me and I reminded him. He didn’t make it to class. Now he would have to plan that ten minutes into his schedule….not to mention the embarrassment he felt when he had a rider with him.”
Planning a breakdown into your schedule. That is the stage most owners reach right before they start searching properly.
What the dealer offered
“Prior to my purchase, I had been inconvenienced dozens of times by the failure of the Pass Lock theft deterrent system and my personal safety was put at risk. Late for work, groceries sitting in a hot truck… embarrassing moments with friends and needing to leave a dangerous area..all because the Pass Lock failed.”
“The GM dealer offered to look for the problem but suggested that if ‘I can live with it, to do so.’ Because the cost to track down the problem and replace the component(s) would be astronomical.”
Read that dealer advice again. It is honest, and it is damning: the official recommendation for a truck that strands you in dangerous places was to live with it, because diagnosing an intermittent Passlock fault at dealer rates costs more than the answer is worth.
May 2016: the install

The next day he sent us two photos: the finished project, and his dip switch settings. That second one is the mark of a careful installer, documenting the configuration before closing everything up.
April 2017, eleven months in
He opened a support ticket that needed no support at all. One line:
“I have the module installed on a 2008 gmc canyon…and laugh everytime it starts.”
October 2017: a few thousand starts later
“A year and a half later….and after a few thousand starts…he has never had a failure. It works !!! We laugh every time and think how the Pro Module has given us a reliable start not to mention the safety factor of being able to go when you need to. Thanks NEWROCKIES for the great bi-pass module.”
Why the Canyon does this
The 2004 to 2012 Canyon and Colorado use Passlock: a sensor in the ignition lock cylinder produces a voltage the Body Control Module checks against a learned value before allowing fuel. As the cylinder wears, the reading drifts to the edge of tolerance, and the truck starts failing on some days and not others, exactly the “occasionally” the seller described. The ten minute wait is the BCM’s tamper timeout expiring.
