The core of every GM security system is the engine immobilizer — sold as Passkey, VATS, or Passlock depending on the car. They all do the same thing, and they all run on one simple principle:
The Key & Lock send an input signal to the TDM through the wiring. If the TDM gets the right input, it produces an output signal to the PCM/ECM that lets the engine start. That's all it does.
NOTE: On some vehicles the TDM is embedded in other modules like BCM or EVO or even in the Instrument Panel Cluster.

Why the resistor trick fails
Resistor is a Partial Bypass
