How To FULLY Bypass VATS PassKEY and Passlock Systems in GM cars

How I Saved My 95 Buick LeSabre

  • Jimbo's race saved by NEWROCKIES!

From Dead On Monday To Racing On Saturday

The dreaded GM security system just hit you? If you are here, chances are you would love a solution you can call permanent. Odds are:

  • Your car was doing great until one day it started randomly playing dead?
  • The security light is flashing and your mechanic doesn’t know what to do?
  • You just had a nice talk with the dealer that ended quite abruptly when he quoted you about 1000$ for the fix?
  • You are in distress because you need your reliable vehicle back, but cannot afford the dealer’s quote?
  • You tried swapping several parts, but the problem persists?
  • You are confused because if/when your car starts it either dies in 2 seconds or drives perfectly?

That’s what we thought. You are in the right place.

VATS, PASSkey and Passlock immobilizer systems are killing cars all over North America, they have a short lifespan and are certainly more effective against owners than thieves.

Thousands of people are trying to bypass GM Security Systems the wrong way. They just bypass a small part of it (key and lock) and so end up with their car stuck again with the exact same problem far away from home and without understanding why. And with the closest dealer ready to jump on them with a 1,000$ invoice.

At NEWROCKIES Inc we have designed a Passkey Full Bypass Module. We call it PRO. And it has the only purpose of saving your car from this problem. Permanently. Guaranteed.

“I would like to send a word of thanks for your remarkable product, it not only was a breeze to install but it brought my truck back from the brink of being junked. You guys have made a believer out of me and I’m recommending your product to all the shops I sell parts too at work. Thank you once again.”

I have a 2000 Chevy Silverado K1500. I believe my ignition switch and/or passlock sensor is not working. When I try to start my truck it runs for a second but then shuts down. Then it will not let me do anything for about 30 mins. I see Where people talk about cleaning the contacts but I can’t find out how to do it. Also do I need to just replace them.

Justin June 17, 2013 at 2:15 pm

Hi Michael, the trick was to clean the resistor contacts, but that was on the old VATS system. On your system, there is really nothing to clean. It works in an entirely different way. You will need to replace the ignition, or bypass the system.

I have a 99 Chevy Silverado 1500 and yesterday it started fine I went to another store shut it off then when I went back to start it, it would roll over and do everything but start then finally after an hour or so it started randomly the security light stays on constantly and when it wouldn’t start it would flash 5 times stop then repeat, then today it started right up twice then same thing happened as yesterday. Is this due to the security system?

Yes Heath, your system is confused and failing. It’s a miracle it’s driving at all. Our Pro Module was designed just for this problem and will work great on your Silverado.

I have a 2004 Chevy Impala, I have temporarily fixed the security issue with my car by removing my dash and sanding the connection poles between my ignition and my BCU. One year later the problem is back. I know it is a resistance that needs to be met, and being a electronics geek have tried to figure out where to jump. I know your device is doing that, and I can’t find out where and am at my last straw with my car. I want it, but want to make sure I am not going to lose my stock radio in the process. Also after installation am I going to have to do the 10 min reset to accept your device?

Reply

Justin June 10, 2013 at 9:52 am

Hi Josh. NO the radio will not be effected, and yes there will be a 30 minute relearn process to teach the system the signal from the new module.

Hi Luke.
At this moment I am sitting in the rain waiting for my car to finally crank back up and get me to where I need to go. This has been goin on for about a year an each time I turn the key to on and wait ten minutes, but now this is really starting to get to me. My car is a 98 Pontiac grandam and I just want to know if you can tell me how to bypass this system. It truly is the most annoying thing ever!

Reply

Justin June 6, 2013 at 9:27 pm

Hi Brooke, if the ten minute reset is not working, your vehicle may be on the verge of total failure. Our Pro Module works on your year Grand Am and will bypass the failed system.

So I have a 2000 Chevy Malibu. I don’t have the original manufacturer key, but everything has been fine until this week. Sunday, went to start my car, and it won’t turn over. All lights work, it’s not the battery or alternator, I just replaced those exactly a year ago. It’s like it’s trying and trying and trying to turn over but it just won’t catch…so I don’t think it’s the starter. And…that lovely red “theft system” light is flashing. And flashing. And flashing. So I left it alone for a few hours, came back, and it started fine until last night. The first time I thought I had flooded the engine on the first start because my hand slipped off the key mid-start…so…I’m not sure. But this time…my car is sitting dead in the mall parking lot…Same thing but I KNOW I didn’t slip off the key when trying to start it. Just chugs and chugs and chugs like it want’s SO bad to start but won’t….and the light flashes away.
Going to go try and start it now…I’m betting it works. So…does this sound like the security system? I’m not getting clicking or dead battery indications…it actually starts to fire up but won’t fully catch…just chugs and chugs.

Reply

Justin June 5, 2013 at 7:31 am

Yes Courtney, there are two ways the security/theft system will disable your vehicle. It will either turn off the starter or the fuel injectors. Your starter works, but the injectors are not. That is why it tries to turn over, but will never catch. The theft light indicates a security problem and this is a normal symptom. Our Pro Module will bypass the theft system and enable the fuel again.

Reply

Courtney June 10, 2013 at 8:33 am

One last question…my key doesn’t have the chip/magnet/resistor thing pictured on your diagram. Never has. It’s just a plain metal key from lowes or walmart. Lost the original years ago. I’m thinking this is only there on some cars and your system will still work with mine, regardless of the key chip, yes?

Reply

Justin June 10, 2013 at 10:02 am

Hi Courtney, they stopped using that system that has the visible “chip” (VATS System) somewhere in the 1997-99 area. After that came the Passlock system and the key looked just like a normal key. There is indeed an antitheft security system on your vehicle and our Pro Module will eliminate it

Reply

Courtney June 13, 2013 at 7:08 pm

Right…I’m sorry for all the questions…but today my car shut off while I was driving. Lost power…going 45 on a highway…and turned off dead in the road. Had been in motion for about 10 minutes. Is that still a theft system issue? If so, I’m ordering with tomorrow’s paycheck. (Hi, I’m a broke graduate student…)

Could the theft system be bonkers enough to shut my car off while driving?!?! It hasn’t turned back on since. Had to tow it. I’m worried my issues are bigger than this device can handle…:(

Reply

Justin June 14, 2013 at 6:18 am

No problem Courtey, questions are why i’m here. From everything that we have discussed, it sounded like a security issue….. UNTIL this latest one. The security or antitheft system is not designed to shut a vehicle down while driving. (Too Dangerous) The system will only do this in the first five seconds of starting the vehicle. This is because the system is designed to prevent the car from being stolen, not shut it down while some criminal is driving down the road. So unfortunately Court, i think you may need to take the car to a mechanic. They can scan it and determine the actual problem. You may have some bad grounds somewhere or a screwy ignition. I really can’t say for sure. Sorry :(

Reply

Courtney June 14, 2013 at 12:26 pm

I just really appreciate you being so honest. It really is evident that you are here to help people and not just take their money like a lot of car shops/repair places do.

It’s at the mechanic now. If I ever hear of a friend having a theft system issue I’ll be sure to send them your way. I’ve told my dad how great you’ve been. We are all so impressed. Thanks for the help!!!

Sorry so late but wanted to give you guys a big thanks. I ordered one of your systems about 3yrs ago for a 2001 Impala. After getting stranded 3 times waiting for the security timeout to pass, security warning lights & alarms while driving, the wife said I needed to do something. Found your site while researching the VATS/Passkey systems. Made the plunge and ordered a unit, came in 2-3 days and installed in under 2hrs. Best decision ever for the car. I haven’t had a single issue since. The wife speaks to me again! :) Too bad you have to bypass the sorry system GM uses (and can’t seem to repair) but at least you guys offer a great and trouble free solution (cheaper than a GM repair too). Thanks again! Goober.

NEWROCKIES, Please post this for the world to read. Hands Down, the Pro Module is the “State of the Art” Solution for the Dreaded Security ISSUES!

On my 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix, with the security light flashing the car would start fine, but then would shut off after 3 seconds every single time. After researching the internet on this famous GM security problem lead me down the path that replacing numerous modules might fix the problem. Or if that don’t work, bring the car into a dealer and have them give me a quote, which in most cases would add up to $1000 or more. I do all my own mechanical work myself, so due to my stubbornness not wanting to bring the car into the dealer it sat for six months, replacing modules, adding resistors, and so on. Then I ran across NEWROCKIES web site. Their PRO Module sounded too good to be true, and that plugging in the Pro Module would completely disable the security system and fix the problem. I was skeptical purchasing this module thinking it was just another Band-Aid, if it even worked. Then I noticed the 30 day money back guarantee and thought, what the heck I can always send it back. After receiving the Pro Module I installed it myself, which took aprox one hour. Then came the big moment, I turned the key on and started the car. I Just about fell over backwards when the car stayed running, and continued to run. So, I stand corrected on my skepticism, and that the Pro Module from NEWROCKIES is a “State of the Art” PERMANENT FIX for defective security systems. The Pro Module saved me hundreds compared to GM’s repair of something that could/would fail again in the future. I HIGHLY recommend this to everyone, and the Pro Module will be going on ALL my cars.

Thanks NEWROCKIES!
Bill

Bill, this is the best response I’ve seen since I’ve been with NEWROCKIES. You hit it all right on the head. Unlike others, NEWROCKIES Pro Module is NOT another half-hearted, substandard remote starter bypass. Instead NEWROCKIES created the best, most complete, high quality FULL bypass that will last longer than most cars that they get installed in. Just like you said, don’t spend money fixing a problem that can/will arise again. Bypass it and forget it. Thanks again Bill, we Love the feedback. :)

2004 Chevrolet Suburban LT 1500 … began to have starting issues during the 2012 winter months, causing my family more stress than the truck was worth … the problem became increasingly frequent over one weeks time, eventually resulting in a completely dead truck … it would crank, start for 1 to 2 seconds and stall out. What I didnt realize is that the LOCK light on the dash would light up right after the truck would fire. I wouldnt even have considered looking for it had I not found this website. I originally replaced the fuel filter, fuel regulator, fuel pump relay, and purchased a new fuel pump … before I decided to drop the entire fuel tank (omg serious pain) I started one last search online for troubles with this truck and this problem … bingo, here I am, and after reading people’s comments I decided to buy the module … my truck starts every single time now, no problems what-so-ever! The product was easy to install, and the instructions for completing the process were perfect. I LOVE NEWROCKIES!!!!!!!! Hi Kasey, our pro module will bypass the antitheft system, but i’m not sure that the antitheft is your problem. You describe the vehicle dying while driving, the antitheft system will NOT do this. It will ONLY make the vehicle stall in the first five seconds of starting the vehicle.

I got my pro bypass few months ago and installed by my self ,took me couple hours because wires on the old module were to short.I put the battery back and car started wright away. The only thing not working is radio there is a power and light on the radio and that is about it.I read the owners manual but what they saying on the manual doesn’t appear on my screen. My question is:on my probypass there was 7 wires but we connected only four[red on pink A-2 ,black on B-5 ,purple on yellow A-4 and green on blue A-3.Do you think that any of the three wires left have anything to do with radio not working.I called buick dealer to give me the code but they said that I have to go to their shop and they gonna charge me 50.00 $ for that “favor’ .Anything? By the way its 1994 buick lesabre limited. Thanks Dragan

Reply

Justin May 21, 2013 at 3:23 pm

Hi Dragan, NO the Pro Module will not effect the radio. The 2 systems are entirely separated and shouldn’t effect each other at all. The radio most likely locked when you unhooked the battery. I don’t know why GM does this, nobody steals factory radios :) And the extra wires on the module are common. Our Pro Module is designed to fix every vehicle on our list, so there are different and extra wires for different applications.

This is my second time writing you guys. I have a 90 Camaro that starts maybe every 7 days. After maybe second or third time turning the key, the security light comes on. I initially thought it was the starter beceause it used to click when I turned the key, but it would eventually start. then it turned into me having to turn the key halfway and waiting three minutes, then ten minutes, now barely anything. Is this a VATS problem or something else?

Reply

Justin May 20, 2013 at 1:41 pm

Hey there Ohio, it is possible that this is a VATS issue especially since the security light comes on. This is normally a good indicator. The older years usually have the “starter immobilizer” as opposed to a fuel cut off. So the symptoms sound about right. Good news is that our Pro Module will bypass 100% of that security system on your Camaro and eliminate the security system entirely. (And i did answer your last question, was just on a different page, :( ) http://newrockies.com/buy-from-me/

I have a 1997 Chevy Cavalier (original owner). It has 204,000+ miles on it and until a few days ago was a great vehicle. On my way to work I stopped at a gas station, filled up, went in a bought a soda and upon my return it wouldn’t start. It always started before. It would run for about a second or two and then shut off. Very frustrating. After trying to get it started and pushing it away from the pumps into a parking spot I noticed the THEFT SYSTEM light was illuminated. I towed the car home, and now the engine won’t even run for a second. The TS light is still on and the engine turns over just fine. Will this kit solve my issue? This car still gets great gas mileage and I’m sure still has years of commuting left in it. If only I can get that dang THEFT SYSTEM light turned off and the motor to fire again! Thanks a bunch.

My sons car is a used 2001 chevy blazer, vortex v6. It’s acting like its not getting fuel, like maybe a pump, spider injector, or some such not working. We’ve looked into the pump and its fine. The service engine soon light has been on since we got it, no security lights, ABS lighs on… Looks like Christmas with the dashboard even when it does run. The key doesn’t seem to have any indication it’s a VAT car… No chip in key, etc. but it does have the module, so maybe someone tampered with the system previously. I really want to try this bypass. Car has started a few times and runs a min or less, then dies like its not getting fuel. Frustrated!

Reply

Justin May 16, 2013 at 6:12 am

Hi Kelly, here is some information that may help you determine if the security is the problem: The truck starts for 5 seconds or less and then stalls. Never more than 5 seconds. The security light should come on after it stalls, whether it be flashing or solid. If you think the light may have been tampered with, you should turn the key forward 2 clicks and look for the security light. It should always light up when you first get ready to start, and turn off after a few seconds. If the light is illuminated at initial key entry, but doesn’t come on when it stalls, you may have other issues not security related.

Hello
I am getting disperate, my 2000 Buick LeSabre Limited, is totally unreliable it starts only sometimes. I can not afford the tow fee’s let along a thousand plus dollars at a Dealership. A country mechanic is sure it is the security system. The car has 125 K miles if that anything to do with the problem. The vehicle has been electrically buggy the two years I have had it. Another car is impossiable. I did not find the 2000 LeSabre on the list of models covered….is this a mistake or does my car have some technical quirk that negates your system….Thanks WDC

Unfortunately we don’t cover the 2000 LeSabre. The system is different than all of it’s predecessors and we have not figured it out yet.

I have a 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix GT. My car has a flashing security light and a PK3 security system. It will run for a while and then the injectors get shut off and the car quits. I can only get it to restart by disconnecting the battery for 6-8 hours and it will restart and then will run for awhile and repeat.

I am fairly comfortable around a car. Is this module plug and play or is there some hard wiring involved. Where does it install? Do you offer express shipping?

Will this also disable the flashing security light?

Hi Rob, your situation sounds like a perfect fit for the Pro Module. It is not plug and play and yes there is some hard wiring involved. Never more than 5 wires and detailed instructions are given to you for location and also how to wire it. Yes the security light will be OUT after install. Most shipping takes 2-3 days nationwide, you can contact us for more info on shipping. http://newrockies.com/contact-us/

Hi Luke,
We have a 2003 Pontiac Grand Am and we believe we have a security issue. We just purchased the car a few days ago and the previous owner told us they thought it was the fuel pump. Since we were getting a good deal we figured replacing the fuel pump would be worth it. After taking the car to Pep Boys they thought it was an ignition problem, they replaced the whole ignition all wires and switch- the same day it happened again. We took the car back and they replaced 3 censors as well as the spark plugs. This too did NOT solve the problem. Pep boys then took it to a computer guy who who informed us it would be a $800-$900 fix!!! we did research and came across the 10 minute trick but it is such a hassle and a pain! I am so happy to have some across your page and am wondering if this will work for us????

I did want to mention, we were waiting for food and had the car in park with the air on, the car shut off on us and wouldn’t start until we did the trick again. Could this have anything to do with the security system??? Hoping to purchase within the next day or 2 if it does. Hope to hear from you soon.

Justin May 14, 2013 at 6:13 am

Hi Grace, unfortunately the security system is designed to only shut down the vehicle within 5 seconds of starting it. So if the car has been running for say 10 minutes and then shut down, this can not be a security problem. You may have something further up stream that is effecting the vehicle and making it appear like the security is failing. Also, when most vehicles stall, the security light will come on as well.

Reply

Grace May 14, 2013 at 11:31 am

D you think it could be the BCM??? Our dome light has been switching… We had the car in pep boys all weekend just for them to give us a complete refund and tell us it was a security issue. And now I am not even sure. We picked up the car yesterday and last night we tried to start the car and the engine would not crank or nothing then everything started to slowly die. And then the car was saying it was overheating when it wasnt. We jumped the car successfully but we are clueless as to what could be the problem.

Reply

Justin May 14, 2013 at 2:15 pm

It very well could be. You need to take it to a qualified mechanic with electrical experience who can run a good diagnostic on it. At the very least just to see what is TRULY wrong with it.

First of all thanks for the information on this website and for making the product. I am wondering if the PASS system is causing my problem becuase after reading the stories and symptoms I think it is. I have a 2003 Monte Carlo SS that has been running fine for years but in the last two weeks have seen the SECURITY light go on and off intermittently while driving. Did not think much of this as I did not have any clue about this security system problem – just figured I would get it checked out soon. This past Saturday the car finally would not start in a grocery store parking lot. I turn the key, hear the dings and the dash lights up but no crank or even clicking (like a dead batt would give). Tried jumping the car to no avail. Have tried the “10 minute” trick but the warning light does not go off – just keeps alternating between SECUIRTY and SERVICE ENGINE SOON. Windows work but power door locks do not – not even with two different fobs. It would appear that no button on either fob does anything anymore (i.e., lock, unlock, trunk and panic) and I find it hard to believe BOTH fobs would die at the same time. So, do you think it is PASS causing my headache and if so, is there anywhere I could read or see the steps to install your product? That would help me decide whether to do it myself (I’m KINDA handy) or have a shop do it. Thanks!

Reply

Justin May 14, 2013 at 6:01 am

Hi Lou, the symptoms you describe are right in line with a security failure. The only thing i see that is kind of off is the Key Fob thing. This may be due to the security failing or the security failure may be due to whatever caused the fobs to quit working. Sorry i can’t help narrow it down any more. Our Pro Module will definitely bypass the security, but i can’t promise anything on the Fob issue. Remember we do have a 30 day money back guarantee if it were to not fix your “no start” issue. No questions asked.

Reply

Justin May 12, 2013 at 9:39 pm

Hi Dahlton, one thing i can tell you is this, the security system can/does shut the fuel injectors off, but it only does this in the first 5 seconds of starting the vehicle. It will never shut down the car while driving. You may have something else going on.

Reply

paul taylor May 10, 2013 at 10:15 am

If the vats module is defective, does the security light warn of this, or is the security light just for the defective ignition wires ?

Reply

Justin May 10, 2013 at 11:30 am

Yes Paul it does. The security light is controlled by the VATS module or Theft Deterrent Module and will illuminate when that module is bad also. This system doesn’t give you any hints on the problem part, i wish it did.

Reply

Justin May 9, 2013 at 5:57 am

Hi Angie, it is normal for the security light to come on when you first turn the key. It should stay on for a few seconds and then go out. If you try to start the car and does not start, and the security light remains on, then i would say you have a security issue that our Pro Module will fix. If you are still driving the vehicle, be aware of the light. If the security light comes on at all while driving, that is a dead give away of failure. It should NEVER come on while driving in normal operation.

Im curious about this product because I don’t want to purchase it and I cant install it myself, so Im skeptic about ordering it because I might have issues finding a mechanic who can install this product.. Hi Justin:
My 04 Grand Am with 291,000 kms on it, suddenly would not start yesterday, leaving me stranded 40 miles from home. The Security light, oddly enough, had come on for a brief period last week while I was driving, but the car remained running well. Yesterday, out of the blue, it wouldn’t start and the light was flashing. My son, who is more mechanically inclined than I, tried to get to the spark plugs but realized he needed a specialty tool on that model. This morning, after Googling the problem, we tried the 10-minute trick and it fired up and then quit after about 3 seconds, then would’nt even fire after that. The Security light now does not flash but stays on while the key is turned to ON. Does this sound like something your PRo will take care of?

Hey. I have a 86 corvette and I have always had trouble with the security system. I had it to a shop years back and they replaced something on the car but it only lasted a short time. So it’s been parked now for a few years and I need her back up and running. Someone had broken in the car last year and busted up the ignition, so I used a screw driver to turn it over and it did ,but wouldn’t start so I sprayed some carb cleaner in the intake and it would catch , but then it stopped turning over and nothing . I was thinking it was the vats again would u agree ??? Do u think your product can fix the problem.. Thanks rodney from Canada

Reply

Justin May 2, 2013 at 3:45 pm

Hi Rodney, it is true that the security system can actually turn off the starter, the injectors, or both to prevent theft. You may be experiencing a security problem especially since you’re using the old screwdriver key. Our Pro Module will bypass 100% of your security system and eliminate any threat of it returning. After installing our Pro, you won’t need a VATS ignition anymore. So if you are going to fix that, any ignition will work.

I just want to say for all of those people out there with doubts that this pro-module thing is AWESOME ! I went to my local dealership and the service guy points to the wall and says. 98.00 an hour shop rate, couldn’t tell me how much it would cost but said to expect at least 1200.00 plus parts. His quote was.. ” Those security system failures can take our techs in all kinds of directions” ? So I have a 2003 Chevy Express 1 ton Van with barely 40 thousand miles on it and a dealership can’t give me a straight answer??
The van sat for literally weeks, Purchased the Pro Module on Sunday and here it is Wednesday and I am now driving my van. Fantastic service. Easy to install very detailed PDF directions !! and I don’t do car work for a living, used a ratchet to remove the dash panel, wire strippers, soldering iron, silver solder and shrink tubing. about an hour and then the 35 minute re-learn proceedure. Van fired right up, even drove to town and got dinner to celebrate. Thanks guys, you Canadians are geniuses !

I have 2004 Trailblazer LT. A couple months back I ran into an issue where my door locks were switching on and off. Also icons on the dash were lighting up. Dash was resetting itself. All this was happening while I was driving it. I pulled into work and noticed my headlights were flashing on and off. So I did some research and found out that the ICP could cause this. So I removed it. Since removing it, it was doing better. Coincidentally? I dunno. Then the other day at 2:30am in the morning the security system started going off. That ended with me running around it like a chicken with it’s head cut off trying to figure out the issue. Car would not start at all and the alarm was going off repeatedly with no chance of it going off. Then it would stop and then start honking obnoxiousness continuously as if that was it’s “Rape Whistle”. Anyways, I ended up removing the battery cable and going to bed. Next day I contacted the family backyard mechanic. He told me it was caused by the ICP and the BCM. He took $300 of my money and said he would get the parts for a discount obviously. Since then it’s as if he ran off with my money. I haven’t been able to get in contact with him or will he respond to me with proper communication of his status. I have since then had to drive the car to the bank. So when I plug the battery back in and start it up. It runs super rough. Very rough idle as if it’s going to die at every stop. (doing some research says it has to relearn everything). But also was instructed to remove the battery cable when I go inside places for a long period of time as it may start the crazy security alarm issue again. SO, I’ve pretty much given up on the guy fixing this issue. I know this is going to cost an arm and a leg to fix with the dealer. I was wondering if this “PRO Module” of yours would get me out of my jam? Does this sound like a possible candidate?

Reply

Justin April 25, 2013 at 5:59 am

Hi Joe, unfortunately this is a completely different issue. You are dealing with an alarm system and possibly a bad BCM. Our Pro Module bypasses the anti theft system, not the alarm system. I’m sorry, but i don’t think our Pro Module can help you. Sorry for the bad news, i hope you can get it worked out.

Yes Michael, this is a classic symptom of security failure. The antitheft security system can shut off the starter, the injectors, or both to prevent theft. Reply

Justin April 24, 2013 at 9:19 am

Hey Cameron, the system can only shut down the starter or injectors. So there is no chance that the fuel pump will be effected. Also the system can only shut down the injectors within the first 5 seconds of starting the vehicle. So you shouldn’t be able to get too far before it shuts you down.

Reply

Justin April 22, 2013 at 3:37 pm

Hi Mark, keys are cheap these days. A reboot might be a little more money guessing you’ll have to tow to the dealer. The trouble with the VATS system on your 95 caprice is that there is no relearn procedure. You can try leaving the key forward for ten minutes to reset the Theft Deterrent Module, but if you have to do this, it is a precursor to an all out failure. The VATS system was GM’s first attempt at theft prevention and the system is quite “stupid”. There is no relearning, or programming, only replacement of parts.

Reply

Justin April 22, 2013 at 3:30 pm

Hi Michael, 99% of the time there should be a SECURITY light illuminating when the security shuts down the car. If you can’t hear the fuel pump, that might be your problem. The security doesn’t shut down the fuel pump, only the injectors in some cases. You can always try our Pro Module to be sure, we do have a 30 day money back Guarantee, but it sounds more like a fuel issue from what you describe.

I figure the running problems have something to do with the MAP sensor, because my buddy hooked up his computer and the preasure never changed. Even with a brand new sensor it read the same. Previously i had followed the wires all the way under the dash but see nothing wrong thats why i though it might have something to do with VATS system.

I ended up putting resistors on the two white wires going to the ignition bypassing the pass key, but the security light still came on and it would die when i would stop at a stop sign, it will run good in mid range, but wants to die in high range also. I put a good ignition out of another chevy but didnt work, so i had a new aftermarket ignition with a built in bypass, and that doesnt work. All of the keys will turn everything on but will not role over engine because of VATS system. How do i fix this without resistors?

Reply

Justin April 18, 2013 at 8:01 am

Hello Joel, i read your comment and iv’e got 2 pieces of information for you. The VATS system consists of 3 communicating parts: The chip key, the ignition, and the Theft Deterrent Module. The resistor bypass only bypasses the key and ignition portions, leaving the TDM still functioning in the system. So the bypass you have done is not complete. Our Pro Module will bypass this completely 100% and you can literally remove the TDM if desired.

You mentioned the vehicle dying while driving. The VATS system will not cause the car to stall while driving. It is designed to prevent theft from the very first attempt. It will read your key in the first five seconds of insertion and will determine if it lets the vehicle start and run. If the vehicle was stalling from the VATS, it will have done it in that first 5 seconds, not while driving.

I have a 1996 Buick Regal Gran Sport. At first my vehicle would start but be misfiring all over the place. That changed into the vehicle starting but dieing right out and/or cranking with no start. Lately, my vehicle has no crank at all but there is lights and everything. It seems to happen after the car has a had a chance to warm up and i shut it off then sometime later go to restart it. It seems to happen at random as well. If i hold the ignition to the start position eventually it would start up. I’ve replaced the spark plugs originally. The battery checks out fine. I believe it to be some sort of electrical problem(crank position sensor, perhaps a bad ground somewhere, i don’t know exactly) but i’ve never came across this where it seems to be spreading to different electrical components of the car, if that makes sense. I was wondering if you think this bypass system of yours would fix this problem. Thanks in advance.

Reply

Justin April 17, 2013 at 7:52 am

Hi Chris, the security on the Regal 96 is a “starter immobilizer”. So when the security is not functioning correctly, the starter and ONLY the starter will be turned off. All of those other issues are not caused by security failure. Honestly i think you have another issue and our Pro Module will most likely not help you.

This is going to be long winded, but I want to give you as much detail as possible.. please advise if my situation will be fixed by your pro module(or another means, as it seems that you know everything about this subject *smiley face* )
2003 Buick Century, about 3 years ago the car intermittently started not starting.. just nothing when I turned the key.. The resistor chip was loose so I figured that was the issue. I would wait a few minutes, wiggle the chip then it would start. It acted like it wasn’t making contact with the two rollers in the black plastic part of the ignition switch. This fix worked for the last 3 years. Then one day it didn’t. Nothing at all worked, not even praying (for you die-hard evangelicals! Yes, I was given that advice). I called a locksmith, he said the ignition cylinder lock would need changed, that was $129 at my local parts store. I figured I could make something else work. I looked in junk yards all around. No ignitions were available. So I ordered one from Rock Auto. It was $43 some closeout special, way better than $129 at least. I installed it and then realized the keys that come with it aren’t chipped.. They are only there to laugh at you while you cry about not having a car that works. Looking further into the issue, I noticed that the black part of the ignition that houses the electronic portion, can be removed, so I swapped the black parts from the old to the new ignition, thinking the old key would be able to turn the ignition and also send the right resistor signal to the GM “we hate you” theft deterrent system.

No luck.. I found some “reset” instructions I think I followed them correctly.. Turn the ignition “on” wait ten minutes, off, repeat X3. Then it should work.. nope. Nothing. Then there was another one. Use a wrong key, try to start.. then wait three minutes, and the right key would start it.. nope..

At some point I had a duplicate key made that previously worked.. so I now have two ignition cylinder locks, one old one new, both don’t work, and I need to get my car running for as low cost as possible, and quickly, since my wife hates waking up at 5am to take me to work… I will now wait to hear from you.. hopefully you have great news..

Hello James. If indeed the security system is what was keeping your vehicle from starting, our Pro Module will fix this problem. It doesn’t matter what ignition you decide to install, and you won’t need “chipped” or “smart” keys anymore. Our Pro Module installs further “Down Stream” and will eliminate all the security in the ignition, so that won’t be an issue anymore.

Thanks for the reply.. I have ordered it. Hopefully all my issues are dealing with the theft deterrent system.. Can’t wait to drive my car again!

My wife has a 2001 Camaro. One morning she gets in it to go to work, turns the key and nothing happens. All of the dash lights, headlights work. When you turn the key to crank everything goes off and there is no sound of trying to crank. No warning sign before this of anything going wrong with the car. We checked the starter, battery and relays and everthing checks good. We bypassed the relay with a wire and the car cranks for two seconds and then goes dead. Everything we read points it toward the TDM (theft deterant module). We find this part on newrockies.com and decided to try it out instead of paying over 1,000 dollars to get the Anti-theft fixed. Installed it yesterday and it cranked right up. Can’t thank you enough Newrockies for this part.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU. I was having days that it would take over 2 hours for my Hummer H3 to start and the stress of wondering every morning if I was going to be to work on time. Since I bought the module and had Auto Pro of Hilton Head install it I have not had one problem starting the Hummer. Again thank you so much.

Hi. I have a 2003 Chevy Express V6 that recently showed all the problems you describe. It wouldn’t start and the security light, which I didnt even know was there, was blinking when I turned on the key. Somehow it started about 10 minutes later after I had tried a few times. But I do not have a key with a chip in it, and have never used the new keys that came with the Van after I had plain metal copies made? I have old roll-up windows and manuel door locks too. I guess I still need to install the bypass? Any style Van still has the anti-theft systems in them? Thanks…

Yes Steve, if you have a security light, then you have an antitheft system. From what you describe, our module will work for you.

Unfortunately Preston, you have a lot more going on than just the security. Whatever is failing “upstream” is probably making the security fail too. You may have ground problems or BCM failure. I don’t think our Pro Module will help you in this case.

Reply

Justin April 11, 2013 at 10:32 am

Hello Satin, i hope this isn’t happening while driving. If the car is dying while driving it most likely isn’t the security. The light only comes on because the car stalled. The security system should only shut you down in the first 5 seconds after starting the vehicle.

Satin Ross April 12, 2013 at 9:38 am

Hello Justin, My Saturn security light flashes the whole time I’m driving the truck. After driving for about 40minutes the steering wheel get stiff. While driving the service light with tool symbol comes on also. Is it something else besides security light? I went to the shop and they couldn’t find any codes wrong with it. Besides that the truck everything else is fine.

This is a question i would send to our support staff. You can contact them here. http://newrockies.com/contact-us/ You may have a low voltage issue. That would bring on the security light and also effect other parts of the vehicle. Maybe look for a bad alternator. Definitely ask our support staff this question.

Also, I understand that you say it will get worse, how bad can it get. It seems to be happening a couple of times a week. I just had the alarm taken out. I thought that might have been part of the problem, I guess it wasn’t. Will your product work for my car and how does it work.

Reply

Justin April 5, 2013 at 8:45 pm

Hi Steve, it can get to the point where the car won’t EVER start at all. When it won’t start, look for a light on the dash somewhere that says SECURITY or ANTITHEFT. Only when this light is flashing or on solid, do we know that the security has failed and if our Pro Module will fix it. And yes we cover your vehicle 2000-2011 Impalas.

I have a chevy Impala LS 2004- all of a sudden it will not start- (can’t hear anything-it’s just dead)- I want a few minutes and it starts. This happens infrequently.
Then twice this week as I am driving down the road the car literally stops dead. Everything freezes up, power steering, brakes, etc.
I have had it to 2 different shops and they cannot find anything wrong wiht it- they had checked for codes and nothing comes up- but this morning as I turned on the car the security light came on and stayed on during my drive.
Is it possible that my problem all along was a security issue?

Reply

Justin April 5, 2013 at 8:33 pm

Hi B, the security system will NOT disable the vehicle while driving. If the security won’t allow the car to run, it will be within the first 5 seconds of starting. Never while driving. You may have something else going on that is also effecting the security system.

What happens sometimes is they will try to start it and it will fire but die immediatly (less than 1 second) then just crank like no spark or fuel. sometimes it will fire right up afterwords and be fine for a month or so then act up again. Other times it will fire then die and not restart for half hour or so. When this happens the security light flashes.

Does this sound like something your bypass box will fix?

Thanks,

Paul

Hello Paul, this sounds exactly like what our Pro Module was designed to fix. The van’s security system is starting to fail, that’s why you start sometimes and not others. It actually shuts down the injectors when it is not functioning properly, believe me it will only get worse.

Hi, I have a 2001 Olds Alero, I’ve had this issue over the years and new how to “bypass” it when it reared its ugly head. However today is something different. I came out and the Key Fob would not work, so I manually unlocked car. When I tried to start I could tell that the fuel from the engine was being shut off. It runs for about a second and then shut down. This is what occured in the past when I did the “reset” trick of leaving in the “ON” position for 10 minutes. Today I noticed that the “security” light which had been on steady for all the years finally is not turning on the dash. Would this “fix” finally solve this issue for me, at wits end with the money I have spent over the past 12 years not realizing this issue and having this headache always appearing in the worest time.

Reply

Justin March 28, 2013 at 12:07 pm

Hi Frank, it sounds like this system has been bad for a long time. That security light should never be on. If it has been on for years, i would say that it was or is failing. Our Pro Module will bypass this security system.

I got a 94 Pontiac Trans Am… according to your website this just might be the fix I’m looking for. Security light is on and the car won’t start. If started it will run for 5 seconds or so then cut off. Car was at an auto shop getting a rebuilt transmission when they came across this problem… they think it’s the aftermarket alarm that’s in the car (of which I had no idea was in there after owning the car for two years). After hours of research I think its the GM VATS system. I don’t have the contact info of the guy I bought the car from… so which one is it??

Reply

Justin March 27, 2013 at 12:48 pm

Hello Uche, i would lean toward the the car’s original security system. The VATS system. I don’t think the aftermarket alarm would act in this manner, and i i’m sure that the aftermarket system would not turn on the car’s SECURITY light. I believe you are experiencing a security failure which our Pro Module will fix.

Reply

Justin March 15, 2013 at 5:09 am

First thing first Julie, i would get a new battery or at least have that one charged very well. Low voltage can trigger a security failure so a new battery will eliminate that threat. If it is still acting up, or you just decide to be proactive, our module will definitely bypass the security system and take that problem out all together.

Well Ken, it’s not the radio. GM DOES use anti theft radios, but they are not part of the Car’s anti theft security system that effects starting the vehicle. If it is indeed the security system causing your NO START situation, there should be a light on the dash that says SECURITY or it may be in that information window. This light is a dead give away of a security issue. As far as the ignition question, Yes it may be the ignition. It may also be the key, the theft deterrent module in the BCM, or any of the wiring between these parts. The real hard part is finding which part is not working correctly. You can spend a lot of money chasing this. This is where our Pro Module comes into play, it bypasses all of these parts eliminating the system and allowing the car to work like normal.

Do Chevy Aveos have this TDM problem?

Yes, Aveos have a factory built in anti theft system but unfortunately we do not cover the Aveo with our module yet.

we have a 2002 chevy venture and the starter went out about a week ago and it ran for about a week or so after we replaced it and all the sudden it wont start and the security light is flashing. it wont click or anything. also we are using a spare key cause we misplaced the original key, not sure if that could cause this.

Hello Sondra, yes the key may be the cause. These keys are called transponder keys. They need to be programmed or the ignition will lock out the starter because it is not getting the input it needs from the key. I don’t know your exact timeline of when the problem started or when the key swap was made, but in the case of our Pro Module, it will bypass the system perfectly. You will also be able to use your key just like it is right now.
