How To FULLY Bypass VATS PassKEY and Passlock Systems in GM cars

It’s when the security light starts flashing that the infamous “chip” in the key becomes a nightmare to many. Gradually the car begins not cranking anymore or if it cranks it would start and die in a second. Randomly it will do this more and more often until it won’t start anymore. VATS, PASSkey and Passlock immobilizer systems are killing cars all over North America, they have a short lifespan and are certainly more effective against owners than thieves. Here is how you save your car – once and for all – by completely removing those systems.

GM Security: Secrets Revealed.

Thousands of people are trying to bypass GM VATS, PassKey and Passlock systems the wrong way. They just bypass a small part of it (key and lock) and so end up like I did with their car stuck again with the exact same problem far away from home and without understanding why. And with the closest dealer ready to jump on them with a 1,000$ invoice.

This is how you can do it right instead. With this unique method, in just few simple steps you will bypass the entire GM security system (including the Theft Deterrent Module), save your car and make sure the problem will never arise anymore. This works for most GM cars 86-09, it’s very easy to install, no reprogramming at all and you can do it yourself if you want.

Don’t worry at this point if you don’t understand these technical terms. You will. I didn’t even know what a PassKEY system was when it happened to me. Out of the blue my 1995 Buick LeSabre would just crank, the engine would start for 1 second and then die. But that’s when I rediscovered I’m an electronics engineer and developed this full bypass module that gave me the great pleasure of removing the security system and throwing it in the garbage can.

Just click on the links below to continue.

Thank you and God Bless You,
Luke

Hi Luke,

I left this same comment on here a few days ago, but now it is gone for some reason.

I have a ’99 Oldsmobile Eighty Eight that sometimes won’t start. When I turn the key, all I get is a single click in the dashboard and nothing happens. The battery is new, and I haven’t noticed if the security light flashes or anything when this happens. If I wait 5-10 minutes, it starts up no problem.

Also, sometimes when I’m driving, the security light will come one for a few minutes and then turn off.

Do you think this is a security system problem?

Chris

Luke, I have a 2003 GMC Sierra and my problem is that often if I try to start it without waiting for the lock (looks like a padlock) light to go out the truck starts and shuts down. If I then turn the key off and back on and wait for that lock light to go out it starts and runs fine. It has been happening more often. The dealership wants to change out the ignition lock telling me that the magnets are weak and not reading the keys. The truck does display security codes on a Tech II. I have tried two keys and two FOBS. Will the pro fix this?

After our car stalled I heard at least 25 of the same stories, but none of them tried this product. Great product and thanks. I will be talking about this product for years to come.

I have a 2007 saturn vue I just bought it has 110,000. I went out yesterday and filled it up for the first time. My kids turned the key on to listen to the radio, when I came back and tried to start it my dash lit up and it wouldn’t turn over. It did however make a bleeping sound. I wasn’t sure what was happening. I read the owners manual and it told me about the passlock. I tried resetting everything but nothing seems to work. I used both sets of keys and it still didn’t work. Any ideas

I have a 1994 Buick Park Ave. that I have been having problems with the Security System for awhile now. I called the mechanic who works on my cares and asked if he could disable it and he said he couldn’t because it tied into other things in the car. I’ve had the computer replaced and just about all of the Sensors but recently I had a friend put his tester on it and it came up with code 626 Vats Failure. I can drive it down the road and it will run fine then all of a sudden the RPM’s will drop off for a second and then come back up. Do you think this is caused by the Key?
Thanks,
Kirk

Reply

Luke February 23, 2012 at 6:36 pm

Kirk, the VATS failure code is surely indicating that the VATS system has problems and you can indeed bypass it with our PRO module and that will solve that problem without any side effects. The fact that while driving the RPM would drop off for a second and then come back up instead is unrelated to security.

Reply

Eddie February 26, 2012 at 3:54 pm

Sounds like the RPM/power drop while moving could be TPS, ignition (optispark?) or a number of things depending just which engine you actually have.

I’ve got a ’99 LeSabre. It’s got juice to the radio, etc.–the battery is less than 3 months old–but turning the ignition (I have the original keys) now produces… nothing. My regular mechanic says it’s error 1629 (Theft Code Set) and that they can’t fix it, only the dealer can. I know nobody tried to steal it in the ten minutes between the time the car was last working and when it stopped working! So, do you think your bypass device will solve it, and can it be installed by someone who is not especially knowledgeable about either cars or electronics?

Reply

Luke February 23, 2012 at 6:44 pm

Steve, absolutely, our PRO module will solve the problem permanently bypassing the entire system. I bought the DIY plans for my 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix GT and built the module, but it seems that the TDM is integrated into the BCM and this module will not work?? Your site lists that this will work for the 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix, but does this not also include the GT model? Is there a way to use this DIY version for the GT?

Reply

Luke February 23, 2012 at 7:06 pm

Doug, sorry for the late reply, the Grand Prix is an exception and the DIY will work even if the TDM is integrated in the BCM. This is because it still has the “Fuel Enable” signal at the ECM and that is what is needed for the DIY to work.

Resti, it is not security as it shut down while driving. I would guess it might be the ECM, but the issue needs to be diagnosed apart.

I sat in the car one day and noticed the flashing Security, went on line, and found the chat rooms about the failing BCM. Fortunately, I found the New Rockies website!!! It took me all of two hours from start to finish to install the Pro-and VOILA! Car cranked right up! No lights and flashes. Save yourself the aggravation- buy this product, install it, and enjoy your car again!!!!

Michael, the typical bypass that is used is the resistor trick that is a partial bypass, that is why you might find yourself with this problem now. Our PRO module will bypass the factory immobilizer in full, including the Theft Deterrent Module (TDM) that is the brain of the system and will correct the problem permanently. We manufacture the PRO module using military standard components with a lifespan of 20+ years so you can be sure the issue will never arise anymore. If you want to purchase our PRO module, you can do it directly from our website at http://newrockies.com/pro , just scroll down and click on the “Buy Now” button. ’94 Trans Am won’t start at random; jump start or popping the clutch in 2nd gear with key on will start it. Jump start took about 10 minutes to charge enough to start. When I shut it off at night, I check it and it restarts right away, but then randomly won’t start in the morning. Sometime it starts in morning but won’t start at gas station or store or after other stops. Seems to be low battery but battery checked fine at WalMart. When it doesn’t start, it begins to turn over, sluggishly, then clicks and clunks, then battery’s dead, but dome and dash lights still work. Battery cables at battery have been cleaned but the connections showed no corrosion.

Reply

Luke February 8, 2012 at 8:30 pm

Randy, this doesn’t seem like a security issue, something like what you describe often happens with a faulty ECM.

and now when i parked at auto zone and cut it off i tried starting back up and it just makes a key chime when i stick the key in but when i turn the key
i get no sound no lights no radio no nothing but when i turn the key back to the off position it makes the door chime noise

and my security light does not flash just like the dash
so what could be the problem?

I replaced the sparks plugs, spark plug cables and some other small stuff. I had to replace the ignition and key, checked the oil, radiator fluid. Luke February 1, 2012 at 8:28 pm

Jordan, in those models the factory immobilizer system interrupts the starter circuit and disables the injectors. I have a 1998 blazer but ive been told my key has no chip in it is that a different kind of security system? the key has teeth on both sides. either way the security light is on after changing my heater core truck cranks but doesnt start.

Luke January 26, 2012 at 2:52 pm

Kevin, in your model the chip is in the lock cylinder, that is why you cannot see it in the key. Same system anyway and yes, our PRO module will work and fix the issue permanently.

Reply

Luke January 26, 2012 at 3:03 pm

Franklin, if it dies while driving your issue is not security or you have another issue on top of security. Security would never shut off the engine after 3-5 seconds are passed from starting the car. I would say you might have a problem in the ECM (main computer) or in the crank sensor.

Hey, just checked out your awesome site today. Ive been having the same problems described by other guests with their own vehicles. My question, do you have anything that will work on my truck?

I have a 1996 Chevy S-10 LS 4×4 – 4.3L Vortex Engine 190HP – with only 103,000 miles on it. My problem is in the steering colem and you have to pull down on the signal switch to engage the anti-thief so it will start. But, it hardly will start anymore. It will crank but not start. If it does start up? It’s for only a second or two. When i finally do get it started, it runs great! Most of the time it takes at least 2 to 3 tries before it starts running. This has been happening for at least a year or more and only getting worse! Its getting to where it takes longer and longer to get it to start, if at all. I’m about ready to give up on trying to fix my truck. I could seriously use some help…

I have a 99 camaro. i bought it a year ago and it has a slow start. sometimes not often it dies. In the mornings it starts right up. after driving a while it turns over a few seconds before starting. recently the security light came on, after a few minutes turns off. what can you tell me about this issue?

Reply

Luke January 26, 2012 at 3:06 pm

Dennis, if it dies within about 5 seconds from starting then it could be a security issue and our PRO module would fix it permanently bypassing the entire system.

I just wanted to say thank-you for developing such a great product. I installed the PRO module in my 2006 Colorado about 4 months ago, and it has solved my problem 100%. To have the issue fixed once and for all and at a reasonable price compared to other “repair” alternatives, I couldn’t be happier.

hay this is what u need to do. you need a 2200 ohm with a terminal trip then cut the yellow and black wire on ur ignition switch put the 2200 ohm resister on one side of the terminal strip and then put the two wires separit on the other side you can buy these two things at phycadelic shck for less than ten bucks.very simple

Reply

Luke January 25, 2012 at 1:58 pm

Brian, what you describe is what we call the “resistor trick” on our website and it is described everywhere on the internet. The resistor trick only bypasses a little part of the system and it’s very common that it would let you stranded again anytime soon if it works at all. Our system bypasses the entire passkey system (including the TDM that is the brain of the system), not just part of it. Most of our customers actually come to us after having tried the resistor trick already. Very many garage shops are coming to us after having seen tons of their customers came back to them complaining because the resistor trick worked just for some times.
We explain those differences quite clearly on our website.

Reply

James, 1 minute is way too much for a security issue. If it is security it won’t stay running for more than 5 seconds. It could be a problem in the main computer (ECM).

Hi Luke, I got a question for ya. I’m working on a theft recovery where the column got pretty jacked up. My question is, does it need to have the lock cylinder in the car to work? That cylinder is 200 bucks and the customer doesn’t wanna pay that, but they’ll pay for the module.

Charlie, once our PRO module is installed you won’t need the lock cylinder, the security will be bypassed. If your customers would like to have a cylinder you can install a cheap one without security in.

Seems like no one has any posts rather it work or not. Let me be the first to say…. this system WORKS!! If you read the instructions at first it seems a bit confusing, but then I kept re-reading it then it made since. Then I took the parts apart and did it. Very fast and simple. About 10 to 15 minutes including removing the panel. It has worked since and it’s been in for about a couple of days. I noticed today I started my car and the security light is on, but my car still starts! So security light BYE BYE!

Blued, the components for the DIY kit can be found in electronics supply stores for about 25$, RadioShack used to sell them, but now they are closing down the sales of electronics components so I can’t suggest them anymore. Assembly is easy if done with care. You do not mention your car model, please note note that the DIY method requires a “Fuel Enable” signal at the ECM to be able to work as stated in the sales page at the very top. The PRO module instead has a very different design and works for all cars listed on the right side of the website.

Have a 2000 cadillac deville. Someone tried to steal it and broke parts of the ignition to where I went to a junk yard where I found the same car and pulled the ignition switch, lock and cylander which had the key and installed it in my car. Problem is the passkey chip is now from a different car other than my own which is making the security light come on and stay on when the key is turned not to mention the car not turning over. I hear there are ways to program this yourself or bypass it all together..DESPERATE for solutions that dont involve mega $$!!

Hello i need your help please. My 2003 oldsmoblie alero is acting up. The first time my key wouldn’t turn over at all. So i got it towed and the mechanic so called said it might be my chip in the car. Ok got that fix car was running real fine. Until 3 months later. Now my car wont start. I was jus sitting in my car and had my key in the ignition on ON and when i went to turn the key over to start it wouldnt. I put 4 gallon of gas thinking it was the problem. Put 5 quarts of motor oil and bought a starter fluid spray to help. Put all that in my car and still wouldn’t start. So the next day i tryed that 10 mintue trick and it worked ok. Enjoy the little time it did uggh. So the next a.m i wake up to bring my son to school and the piece of shit wont work. I dont want to spend all my money cause i don’t have none to spend broke. So my question is what can i do manually or do you think it something else could be wrong im very upset.

Karl, I believe the first time you mention that you added gas in the tank it could be just a case that it started after it. I have a 1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue. My ignition was going out (not able turn the key anymore) so i tore out the old and bought a replacement. But the security feature in my car made it unable to start. Thinking it was a bad ignition i went and purchased another with the same result. I went to a dealer and they told me i would have to have my car towed $, a $90 inspection and then however much more $ to fix the problem. Im not made out of money, so i looked online and found this article. I was skeptical forking out 170 some odd dollars for something off the internet. IT WAS WORTH IT!!! I followed the directions (simple since my dash was already torn apart) plugged the wires in correctly then did the little off and on thing. It Worked!!! I have a 2000 GMC Sierra pick up and the security light used to come on once in a while but now it seems to stay on most of the time. The problem with it not starting began about 3-4 years ago and I realized it had to do with the fuel system so I changed out the fuel pump and filter before I found others on line having the same issue. Then I learned the wait 10 minutes and it will start right up trick. I don’t think my key has the black chip in it so will this “fix” work on mine as well?

Reply

Luke November 29, 2011 at 7:47 pm

Cedric, if the passkey light stays on, you might have a security system, but the fact that it starts missing when you stop or idle has nothing to do with security, it could be the fuel filter or the ECM or a problem in the fuel pump, but not security, the security system only works within the first about 5 seconds of starting the car, after that it’s automatically disabled and cannot cause any issues.

The Pro Bypass worked like Magic, though i had some issues at first but with your technical support, my Saturn Vue XE which has been parked for almost a year due to the TDM, finally came to live. I have spent close to $2000 on this vehicle. I had to send the ECU and TDM back to GM for reprogramming. They came back with no effect but thanks to the PRO Bypass. I will get to use this vehicle for christmas.
The problem with the vehicle statrted with a security lockout, the shop i towed it to asked me to change the ECU which we did and that marked the Genesis of the whole problem but thanks to the PRO Bypass, i can laugh and keep my money in my pocket.

I’ve got a 2000 Oldsmobile Alero that won’t start anymore. I’ve had it for just over a year. A month or 2 ago it started quivering when it started up. The engine light turned on and it was at maybe half horsepower while driving. Last Friday night I tried to drive it home from a friend’s house. I tried to start it up and it wouldn’t start. After a few tries, the security light came on. After about 10 tries it started up. I drove home, and didn’t drive on Saturday at all. I went to start it up on Sunday Morning and it wouldn’t start. The security light came on, and I spent an hour changing my battery and my coil pack and put in new oil and and still couldn’t get it to start. It’s got other problems too, but do you think the start up issue could be the security and bypassed with your product?

Reply

Luke November 28, 2011 at 2:32 pm

Chad, the start issue could be security and the PRO module would fix it, but the half-hp while driving is unrelated and could be due to a bad sensor or faulty ECM.

Hi, I have a 1999 Eldorado ETC. I am getting the ‘starting disabled’ message when I try to start the car. There is an error code B2710 in the system (related to the key/security). However, the security light is not on. If I leave the key in the ignition for several minutes, a message appears that that the problem is from the anti-theft system. I assume that this is a problem with the VATS/Passkey system. Do you have a module for this car? It is not in the ‘It works for’ list on the webpage. Thanks, John.

Hey Luke,
We have a 1993 olds 88 Royale. It has always worked fine, but recently, it wouldn’t start(no crank). So I ran a wire straight from the ignition to the trans switch, now it will crank, fire, and die. I have never had a chipped key, and had never seen a security light, until through this process, I found(and repaired) a cut teal wire behind the glovebox. Now I have the blinking security light. The car won’t start, even if I wait the ten minutes, so I am thinking that maybe someone had done some form of bypass, that has now failed. Does this make sense to you…? Any help would be appreciated!

Reply

Luke November 19, 2011 at 11:13 pm

Chris, what usually happens when the security light start flashing is that the owners cut the security light wire and sell the car ASAP because they know the cost of fixing that part. Or they often do it as well to pass an inspection. If you install our PRO module the entire system will be bypassed and will never create problems anymore, whatever the previous owner did.

I have a 2001 Yukon XL. It appears that my car is locking out the engine. All of the accessories work inside the car, but the car will not start. In the past we have been told to disconnect the battery for 6 hours and then reconnect and that should fix gthe problem. Most of the time it does. We have had it to the dealer for this but it does not show any error codes, so they want to just start replacing things with the steering column and ignition ($1000-1500). Last night the car did it again and we towed it home after getting home the car started (we had the turned to the on position so we had head and taillights. What is your opinion as to the problem, will your systeem work?

Luke November 17, 2011 at 1:12 pm

Angie, it can definitely be a security issue if the car never stalls while driving. If it is security our PRO module will fix it.

Hi

My ’06 Colorado has been giving me problems with passlock. Over 5 years it has slowly gotten to the point where I will not be able to start my truck for 50 minutes at a time. This happens several times a wek now.

I live in Hawaii and would like to know if there are any affiliated shops that can install your bypass for me.

I’d hate to screw it pu as I need by truck for business every day

My wife has a 05 Impala. About a year ago it started not stating. The car would not even try to crank. She would try time and again without success. After 10-20 minutes later it started normally. We tried moving the car back and forth in and out of gear. Eventually it would start. (the thought being it might be a flat spot on the starter). We eventually took it to a shop that changed the starter anyway and charged over $300.00. Of course this was not the problem. I looked further and found the starter relay. For $15.00 I replaced it and thought we were in business. Because it is so infrequent. I checked all the wiring harnesses for tightness and found no problem. It still exists. My wife travels alone across the city from time to time and I do not want her stranded. I contacted a freelance key module company and explained the symtoms and was told in all honesty that he does not believe the key is the problem. He was the one that suggested to look into the enable / disable module.

What’s your take on it and can you help. (and of coursr, how much)

Thanking you in advance for your input.

regards,

Dave

Dave, this could be a security issue, and in that case our PRO Module will fix it, but it could also be related to the ECM.

Is there a way that you know of to disable this or to somehow pop out the tumbler so that I can take a look at it? please email back if you can.

Zane, the only way is to fix the security system or bypass it completely. Our PRO Bypass module take care of the latest one and is the best way to not only fix the actual issue, but also prevent any future issue of the factory security system that is very expensive to repair.

amelia November 26, 2011 at 4:55 am

hi luke, can you tell me what kind of details you need, we replaced the ingition switch anf lock cylinder, would that cause the no spark condition? we also replaced the crankshaft position sensor, when it was probably not bad, the orginal problem started when the truck died and then would not start again, we think it was originally the fuel pump, but my husband would not take it to the dealer for diagnosis, to shorten this story, every sensor has been replaced every connector, the pcm, the crank position sensor, i feel we have totally screwed the truck up electrically, do you think the pro will take care of the problem. your opinion would be greatly appreciated. thank you, amelia

Reply

Luke November 28, 2011 at 2:55 pm

Amelia, if you changed the ignition switch and lock, then the issue could be definitely with the security system as that is part of it and needs to match the rest. Our PRO module would bypass the security system and solve this problem.

Jose’, sorry for my late reply, I had to talk with one of our techs before replying. The issue you are seeing is in what GM calls “Content Security” system and not in the Passlock Immobilizer security. Our module is able to fix permanently the no-start issues with the Passlock/Passkey/VATS immobilizer. Issues caused by the “Content Security” system are not covered by our module and they are unrelated to the immobilizer and do not cause the car to fail starting.

Luke November 8, 2011 at 12:03 pm

Jon, as Jack has replied to you in support, the problem in your car goes outside of the security system, most probably a general failure in the BCM module or a ground or electrical problem somewhere and needs to be diagnosed apart. If the car dies while running it could also be an ECM problem. Our PRO module is an excellent solution to fix issues with faulty factory immobilizers, but unfortunately cannot be a general fix for any no-start issue. You can definitely return it for full refund even if used, our Money Back guarantee is unconditional.

It’s a 1991 Corvette with a six speed manual and L98 engine. It only occasionally starts. If I put the key in with the driver’s door open and the courtesy lights come on and the chime begins to sound, it will crank and start. If it doesn’t chime and the courtesy lights don’t com on, it won’t crank at all but most of the dash lights will come on. Does this sound like a vats problem?

Reply

Luke November 5, 2011 at 2:51 pm

Pat, looks like a VATS problem is there. Our PRO module will surely fix the no-start problem.

Reply

Pat November 5, 2011 at 4:16 pm

Will the PRO module disable the chime and courtesy lights too?

Reply

Luke November 9, 2011 at 12:01 pm

Pat, sorry for my “too fast” reply on your previous message. Actually, this might be more an electrical or ground issue than a strict security one. I talked with one of our techs and it looks like something else is going on in your car. This said installing the PRO module might still fix the no-start issue – if it is due to security – as it will take care of providing the right signal to the ECM possibly getting power from a sane circuit, but the courtesy lights and the chime are unrelated to security.

Reply

Pat November 11, 2011 at 9:30 am

Wow, what an honest, helpful and informative answer. I’m wondering now too if it’s not the ignition switch itself.

Hi Luke,

I have a 2000 Camaro that has had the security light on for months. I asked the stealership about it and they said it needed a new ignition key switch. As the car was otherwise running fine I did not get the repair done. Just recently the car will start and run, but when you start driving all the dash lights will light up and the car will try to shut down, or in some cases will kill the engine when driving. It will then start again, but when you start driving it does the same thing. Could this be a security problem or should I be looking for a short?

Reply

Luke November 5, 2011 at 1:29 pm

Clint, I think you have a security issue because of the theft light coming on, But for sure what is causing the car to shut off while driving is a different issue that needs to be diagnosed apart – I would guess a faulty ECM/PCM.

Alex November 4, 2011 at 8:30 pm

I have a 1995 GMC Jimmy – 4.3L Vortec V6. It appears that a previous owner played with the anti-theft wiring, possibly trying to bypass the system.

Truck now runs for a few seconds and the dies. Replaced fuel pump, relays, injector spider, injectors, you name it…

Does your system work on my vehicle? It would be a great relief to be able to correct this issue and actually drive “the big white mail box with tires” in my driveway.

Please help! :)

Reply

Luke November 5, 2011 at 1:23 pm

Alex, looking at our databases, the 95 Jimmy should not have any immobilizer installed, so there is nothing to bypass unless some aftermarket immobilizer was installed in your model.

testimonial for the Pro Bypass. I just ordered and installed the Pro bypass and am now a very happy customer. The PB really did the trick. I have a 97 Olds Achevia and it was having all of the security symptoms, starting for three seconds then shutting off. It did start eventually sometimes. There was no rhyme or reason to it and many new parts were replaced prior the the PB. There was a need for the tech support and they were very fast to reply and give great instructions, thanks Jack. I do recommend to check the J1 jumper and the dip switch settings before installation. My unit needed the J1 jumper pushed in a little.
After some tweaking my Achevia is starting and stays running with a quick bump of the key. I was almost ready to give up on my POS and now, at least for tonight, I feel like I got a new car. I am so happy with the Pro Bypass that I am seriously thinking about becoming a installer. Thank you so much for your this service. Any one in the STL area hit me up and I will help any way I can. Reply

Luke November 7, 2011 at 2:14 pm

Matt, sorry for my late reply, it might indeed be a security issue. Before cranking, you should hear the Fuel Pump priming, if it primes (turns on for some seconds) then the issue is not with the Fuel Pump and might be security. The security system disables fuel through the injectors, but doesn’t affect the Fuel Pump at all.

How easy would it be for a thief to install one of these kits on my 1994 Park Avenue? I just bought it last week and my buddy told me I can stop using my club because of the “chip” in the key. This was yesterday. I’m still using the club until I found out how hard (or easy) it is for a thief to bypass this security feature and drive off with my car.

Reply

Luke November 1, 2011 at 10:58 am

Albert, if you install the PRO module with a connector, you can unplug it and take it with you whenever you want and the car is probably even more secure than with the factory system as it wont start even with the right key in until you plug the PRO module back in.

My 1995 cadillac sts lights up the security light when i turn on the key, it is very slow to start, cranking around 6 seconds at normal speed. Security light on while i crank and goes out just before engine starts after the 6 seconds of cranking. It feels like it needs oil pressure before it starts the fuel pump, is this possibly a problem with the security system? No security light on after the engine has started.

My 2002 WS6 T/A convertable had a cup of sweet tea spilled on the power top switch which gummed it up and (I’m guessing) made it quit working. (top would go down, but not up) I replaced the switch, top works. Not sure, but it seems the “security” light came on around that time, car always starts, but the light stays on when running.
The 10 min. fix has no effect, the “relearn” the remote mentioned in the owners manual does nothing. Does this sound like a failure waiting to happen, and will your module turn the light off?

Luke November 1, 2011 at 10:29 am

I have a 2002 Century. Security light came on about 2 months ago and I never could figure out why. It didn’t flash, just stayed on while the ignition was on. Suddenly now the engine won’t crank when you turn key. You can by-pass sellonoid and turn it over, even starts for a second and dies. I have decided it has to be the vats system. One Buick dealer didn’t know, another said they just bypass the system instead of fix them. Several told me stories of turning key to on poition and leaving for 10 minutes. One said do it 3 times in a row. Another said windows and doors have to be closed at all times (I guess you just sit in the car for 30 minutes?) Can you give me a better answer, I really can’t afford to pay GM to try their “hit & miss” money game, currently un-employed!
Thanks for any help!

Have a 96 Pontiac Sunbird 2.2 liter that will intermittantly not start when cold, will start for a second or two then stop, have to try and start it a few times to get it running. It always seems to fire up just fine after it has been running a few, replaced fuel pump, injectors and pressure regulator, seemed to make the issue a little better for a few days now its worse than ever, seems like a fuel issue but after loooking at your site I am wondering if its a security issue?I have no standing codes and the security light never lights up other than when the card is started. If it was security issue shouldnt it happen after the car has been running as opposed to when its cold??

Reply

Luke October 20, 2011 at 10:22 am

Scott, a security fault can happen in many way, but generally all standard electronics components have 3 main enemies: Cold, Heat and Humidity, but actually Cold is the most typical causing problems. In those models like yours the security light is driven by the TDM itself, so if there is a problem in the TDM the light might not turn on at all, this is typical too on those. The symptoms you describe of randomly not starting or dying in a second are also typical of a security issue especially if the car never shuts off while driving.

Just wanted to add my recommendation for the PRO VATS full bypass. I have a ’91 Cadillac Deville which began to act up and took more than one try to start occasionally, to doing absolutely nothing when the key was turned.

We had it towed to our repair shop, which told us that nothing was wrong with the starter or battery and spent hours looking for a wiring problem, without being able to fix it.

In my frustration I turned to Google and found what looked like the answer. I needed to bypass the VATS system. My husband and I aren’t really the DIY type and I wanted something that would solve all the issues of this faulty system. And with a money back guarantee, there was nothing to lose.

I order the PRO bypass and a neighbor helped us to install it. We had to follow the troubleshooting directions (and change some of the switches) and now I have a car that starts every time!

I did and it started right up after 10 min. and keeps starting every time. Did the system need to be reset by the 10 min. fix? I read all the comments on this page.. all the cars kept starting after installing pro bypass. I’m so frustrated with this car. Any suggestions??? Please help!

Tanya, when you install the PRO module in your model you don’t need to do anything else and it will work forever – no resets are ever needed. Please make sure you remover or at least left unplugged the factory TDM, our PRO module replaces the TDM. Make also sure all connections are tight and switches are set correctly, there might also be a problem in the wiring from the TDM connector to the ECM. This is definitely something our GM specialists in support will help you fix, please contact them at the email address stated in the troubleshooting papers or through our “Contact Us” pages selecting Technical Support. No worries at all, we stand 110% behind our product and you will indeed have this fixed, this is why we are here.

Sam, if your car/truck is in the list on our website, the PRO module will work with it. Your model probably has the chip in the cylinder instead of the key.

hi luke,i have pretty much read all the comments and i really like all the positive responces. i myself have a 98 pontiac sunfire with all the crankin and shutting off, the security light blinking and the rest that goes along with the vats system.i have completely disassembled my car looking for the vats and the ecm,not a mechanic as you will see lol! pleases tell me where the vats and ecm are? also gonna take a look at your product and hopefully get it put in .

Luke October 14, 2011 at 9:28 am

Tim, the 98 Sunfire together with very few other models is an exception to the general rule and has the security system managed by the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). I know it makes little sense, but that’s what it is in Both Sunfires and Achievas.

I have a Colorado 2009. Twice since I have had it it would not start and I would have to wait 10 minutes, then it would start.

Does this system work on a 2009 Colorado?

Luke October 13, 2011 at 9:18 am

Lisa, yes, Colorado till 2010.

Hi luke,

My wife has a 1998 sunfire with an issue which comes from the alarm system i believe. There is no chip in the key, so i dont know what type of security it has. The problem is when she puts the key in there is no dings. When the key is in the on position the only lights on the dash is abs and engine. we have to wait for all the lights to appear before it will start. Anywhere from one minute all the way up to as much ad twenty. Could your product work? And is their a return warranty if it doesnt?

Thanks,
Jamie

Luke October 13, 2011 at 9:22 am

Jamie, we have 30 days money back guarantee, so if it doesn’t work you can return it for full refund, but what you say looks more like a bad BCM or IPC to me more than security.

I just want to say that I myself have purchased the pro bypass module for my 1997 buick lesabre and it works like a charm. I was so excited and surprise on how easy and simple it was to install . Im proud to say that my all black buick is running better then ever without the nightmare of my security light coming on ever again.
Thanks Newrockies for an outstanding product that guarantees to make life easier for GM owners.

hey Luke,

I have a 2002 saturn SL2. I went outside to go to work the other day and it wouldn’t start. The security light is on but when i go to start it, it goes off but comes back on after 10 seconds. The car is cranking, it just won’t turn over. Tried disconnecting the battery over night and jumping the car, neither helped. Going to try the 10 minute wait trick when i get home tonight. Does this sound like a problem your product could fix? Thanks in advance.

Luke October 8, 2011 at 3:42 pm

Nick, this definitely sounds like security, our PRO module will do fix it.

I have a 2001 Monte Carlo SS and am experiencing problems with the security light coming on and all kinds of strange things happening. My blinkers won’t turn on at times and as soon as I click for the bright lights and let off the switch, they go back to dim. Is this an issue that can be solved by the bypass? By the way, my key doesn’t have a security chip, it is and always has been a normal key. A while back the car wouldn’t start. I would have to disconnect the battery and wait about 30 seconds to reconnect, but I haven’t had that issue for a couple of months.

Reply

Luke October 4, 2011 at 9:46 am

William, I believe the problem with the blinkers is a different thing, but the no start issue can definitely be related to security and our PRO module will be able to fix it. Your car has a passlock system with the chip in the cylinder instead of the key, that is why you see a normal key.

Hi, Luke
I have a 97 chevy cavalier. The car starts and runs fine. some times when I start the car the tack and temp work and two lights are on air bag and seat belt. then they stop working and the theft system light and some outher ones come on and tack and temp stop working. when I put my seat belt on the tack and temp start to work and all the lights go off but the air bag, seat belt and theft system. but this does not always work by putting the seat belt on.
Will the full bypass work to fix this? Or can I do the diy way.
Thanks Shawn.

Reply

Luke October 4, 2011 at 9:51 am

Shawn, the DIY won’t work for your model, but very honestly I believe you have a bad BCM, not security issues. You can try reset the BCM with a Tech2.

Reply

Thomas October 3, 2011 at 12:11 pm

Luke,

Here is the situation. I have 2000 Cavalier. I have the theft security light flash, and do the 10 minute relearn and it starts right up. I have noticed lately it comes on and stay lit while driving. Then one day after work it wont start, and no blinking theft light. Could not turn it over. pulled the column apart and disconnected my remote start still nothing. At this time I have a cut yellow passlock wire, and s stripped but not broken black wire. I managed to attach a resistor 2.2k on the yellow wire from the bcm side and connected the other to the black. The theft light was blinking. Did the 30-minute relearn and the code was accepted because there was no blinking security light, but still the car wont start. Do you think your solution can solve my problem. Your thoughts.

Reply

Luke October 4, 2011 at 9:57 am

Thomas, it look like a security issue, but the resistor trick you are using will only fix part of it. Cavaliers and Achievas have a specific timing protocol to respect that is imposed by the BCM. The PRO module will work on your car and fix the issue.

I have a 1998 Pontiac Bonnieville that will not start. The battery, starter, cables, and relay have all been tested and are good. When you try to start the car there is just one big “click” but nothing happens. The security light is on steady. I have disconnected the battery for days. Does this sound like the security system? Please help I’m in school and can’t afford a new car.

Hi Matt,

I was wondering if you found a solution for your car problem. I have the same issue with my 1999 Boneville. However mine does not have the clicking sound.

Reply

Luke October 5, 2011 at 4:14 pm

Matt, sorry for my late reply, its difficult to say from those little details, it can certainly be a security issue especially if confirmed by the security light turning on or flashing, but it could also be a problem with the starter. If it is a security issue our PRO bypass module will fix it.

i have a 2006 chevrolet impala lt 4 door sedan, i have an on-going process with this vehicle, i go to put my key in the ignition and it wont turn over, all my lights and everything come on, but the car wont turn over. Then a security lights flashes on my dash board, so i go to take the key out of the ignition and it wont come out. So i leave the key in the ignition for the next two or three days or more and i go and try too start the car-the car then starts. Please tell me whats wrong with my car. Thank you!

Reply

Luke October 3, 2011 at 9:56 am

Tiara, from what you say about the key getting stuck in, i think you might have a damaged cylinder. That would also affect security because a part of the security system is in the cylinder itself. Unfortunately our modules are compatible with the Impala only up to 2005.

i have 2002 olds alero it has had a security issue several times in the past year or so, thus far the 10 minute deal has worked till today. driving the car down the road the dash lights up and the engine dies. i waited about 15 minutes, it started i drove it about 5 miles it did it again. i thought i would try the famous 10 minute deal. twice! it did not work the security light is on but not blinking, car cranks but will not start. looking for suggestions.

Reply

Luke October 1, 2011 at 9:39 am

Mike, if the engine dies while you are driving that is not security, I can tell you for certain. The security system is active only within the first 3-5 seconds of starting the car. What you describe of the dash lights up and the engine dies while driving is often due to a bad ECM but needs to be diagnosed apart. From other things you say (security light and you stopping the engine and then being unable to start) I would say you might have a security issue on top of the other issue as well, but I’m sure the issue above is not security.

We bought an oldmobile achieva 1997, for our son to drive, about 3 months ago. The guy that we bought it from, told us in order to start it, we had to turn the key on but not all the way. we have to wait for the security light to come on, then turn the key the rest of the way, and the engine will start right up. and he was right, at least until a few days ago. the security light quit coming on. and the car wont start. it will turn over, then die. and then if you try it several times a day, it might start???? the car repair guy can not fix it. Help!

Kerry, i believe i just replied to your son as well, our PRO module should be able to fix the problem, i’m pretty sure its the security system, if it comes out something else you can just return it within 30 days for a full refund.

Installed the pro bypass a few months ago on my 96 Buick Roadmaster Wagon. Starts every time now. This product is recommended. Also was able to get two more cheap ignition keys made because the chipped keys are not required. Here’s an install tip: Instead of discarding the old security module box, I removed the guts and soldered the new pro bypass to the old wiring connector pins and put the bypass inside the old box. After doing this, all thats left is reconnecting the box back into the harness under the dash. This is much easier that trying to do all the wiring wile laying on the floor of the car. And a much cleaner install.

Luke,
Have a 98 gmc suburban and it had an ignition bypass for this very same problem… the switch was right under the steering wheel and I was always uber paranoid about accidentally hitting with my knee…lol …because it was a toggle switch that bypassed the “input” side of things… (when bypassed – the “security” light was always on in the truck)… but I could care less about theft.. I agree that these theft systems are the biggest racket gm has ever concocted… totally useless and they put drivers and their kids at huge risks… because you’re screwed if they fail and the cost is enormous to fix. So I went to go somewhere and got that tell tale / all to familiar sound of the engine turning over and then shutting off… I know that sound all too well because I’ve had to deal with this crap on several occasions. So I think that finally either the TDM has failed or something happened to the bypass rig… (I immediately thought I had kicked lol) … so I’m figuring lets just bypass the whole damn thing once and for all!! hope this works! thanks

hi i have a 2000 oldsmobile alero the security light has only come on twice since ive had it for a year. a week ago it came on for the second time i tried the 10min solution and it worked, however, last night i was driving on the highway going 70 and my car began to slow down on its own and eventually cut off. it would not start up the security light is staying on not blinking it wont even turn over when trying to start it…my car has never done this before nor had any other problems in the year i have had it im confused….

Reply

Luke September 27, 2011 at 9:28 am

Ani, from what you say I can tell you for sure the problem in your car is NOT security. The security system only works immediately at start time or anyway within 3-5 seconds of starting the car. Anything after that time is not security. I would guess you might have problems with your ECM (the main computer of the car)
